In 1905 it was recommended that no fixed defences be continued in the Isles of Scilly. Prior to their decommissioning, the Island of St Mary’s had the following batteries:
Naval Battery with two 6-inch Mark VII guns
Near Steval Battery with two 12-pdr Q.F. guns
Woolpack Battery with two 6-inch Mark VII guns
Banta Carn with two 12-pdr Q.F. which were not mounted at this time
